CHAPTER I THE START—EASTWARD BOUND

In 1927 “The New Outlook,” ofiicial organ of The United Church, sponsored a tour through Western Canada on the occasion of the sixtieth anniversary of Confeder- ation. It was a marked success. This year in celebration of a century’s progress in the field of religious journalism, “The New Outlook” undertook a similar tour of the East- ern part of Canada, with one great aim in view, -—to make some contribution to a United Canada by promoting inter- change between East and West: to help bind the scattered sections of our great land in the bonds of mutual under- standing and good will.

The membership of the party was undenominational, and was drawn from all parts of the Dominion, with a few from The United States, which fact contributed much to the realization of the aim, which the tour had in view.

On Monday, June 17th, 1929, almost two hundred people, who were going on the tour, assembled in the Board Room of Wesley Buildings for evening dinner. The orchestra in connection with the Publishing House, played during the meal, and Dr. S. W. Fallis was in charge of the brief, program that followed it. The Moderator, Dr. Gunn, gave the blessing of the church to the enter- prise, and expressed the hope that it would accomplish the worthy purpose for which it was initiated.

Controller Bert Wemp of the city of Toronto, Mr. A. T. Weldon, first vice-president in‘ charge of traffic, Can- adian National Railways, and Mr. R. W. Burnaby, Toronto, Trade Commissioner for the Maritime Provinces, were
