They soon chop¬ ped it down, burnt off the wood, and afterwards fenced it round. I then supplied them with seed Potatoes, hoes, &c, and very nearly the whole piece of land was planted with Potatoes; and I never saw a finer crop,—some of them have stored enough to last them until the next crop, provided they have not rotted during the winter, which I rather dread. I was much gratified to hear from the oldest Inhabitant in Charlottetown ( Samuel Nelson , Esq.) he had bought some Potatoes from an Indian, for the first time in his life ! and they were the finest he had ever eaten. In ac¬ complishing the foregoing, together with some small sums, given from time to time to some of the elder Indians when in distress, my moiety of the grant has been ex¬ pended,—after deducting £7 2s. 6d., forwarded to the Rev. Mr. Perry , at Miscouch by request of Government, as will appear by the account annexed. I trust the Indians have made a beginning, that will ultimately be attended with good results, several of them being now most anxious to obtain more land to enable them to put in larger crops. I observe the different encampment, of Indians feel a desire to continue in the dif¬ ferent parts of the Island they have hitherto been accustomed to reside, and unless some plots of ground could be obtained in their respective neighborhoods, it would be difficult to induce them to plant; they also require to be near the water.
