Island sighted and visited by Jacques Cartier. l72l— Abbe Brislay, first missionary to the Island, arrived. 173o—M Depenoons arrived from France as Governor and landed at Port-la-Joie 1739—Forest fire devastated country from East Point to St.Peter's Bay. 1758—Lord Rollo, arrived at Port-la-Joie in August and took pos- session for Great Britain. r763——Island formally ceded to Great Britain by Treaty of Paris. Memorial by the Earl of Egmont for a grant of the whole Island to himself, his nine children and a number of land and sea officers. 1764—May 9, Prayer of Memorialists definitely refused. Captain Holland arrived from England to make a survey of the Island. i764—May 12, Admiral Knowles and associates ask for a grant of the whole Island to be divided into lots of 20,000 acres each, and engage to complete the settlement of the Island within ten years. i767—Land of the Island divided by ballot. subject to certain con- ditions, among persons who had claims upon the British Government. I768—Mr. Morris, land surveyor, laid out the site of Charlottetown. l769—June 28, Imperial Order in Council passed that a separate Government be constituted in St. John’s Island. July [4, Walter Patterson appointed first Governor of the Island of St. John, and Seal ordered for the Island according to the following description : “ On the one side, a representation of a large spreading oak with a shrub under it and the leg- end or motto underneath, Parva sub Ingenti ; and this in- scription around the circumference, ‘ Sigillum Insulate SanctiJohannis in America, and on the reverse His Majesty‘s arms, crown,'garter and supporters.’ ” On the circumfer- ence were to be the King’s titles in Latin. July 31, Thomas DesBrisay appointed first Colonial Secretary.
