1777—Dec. 13, H. M. S. Hunter arrives with arms and ammuni- tion ; the lives of King's loyal subjects saved by this timely arrival. Callbeck applies to the Admiral of the Navy at Halifax to keep a ship of war constantly stationed at the Island. He erects a seven, a three, and a two gun battery, as well as barracks for reception of troops.—-Enlists 80 men.
i778—Two American privateers attack the Island and commit depredations, wantonly shooting cattle and sheep. They escape before the force sent against them arrive—Woman tried and condemned to death for robbery.
1779—July 10, Chief Justice Stewart reports the ruinous state of the house occupied by the late Chief Justice, which had been alternately used, since his death, as a church, prison, barracks, assembly house and courthouse. DesBrisay, Administrator .of the Government. A transport arrives with five officers and 200 men of Kuyphausen's corps, on the way to New York, but landed on account of the bad condition of the transport. Ofiicers well quartered; men build comfortable huts, and provisions and mm are laid in to serve till the middle of next June.
i780—June 28, Governor Patterson returns to Charlottetown after having been eight months on the voyage—six months at sea. July 30, Governor Patterson reports the passage by the Legislature of an Act to change the name of the Island from St. John to New Ireland.
l781—Feb. 28, Secretary of State (Germain) declines to sanction the suggested name of “ New Ireland," as that name has already been appropriated. He suggests New Guernsey or New Anglesea. Nov. 19, Governor Patterson reports to Secretary of State that he has appointed Alexander Rich- ardson to be schoolmaster in the room of William Patterson, who is dead ; does not wish the appointment confirmed as he is not a Latin scholar, but he will do for a time as he is a good English scholar.
I782—Jan. 25, Governor Patterson reports the construction of a winter boat to cross to the continent and put the Island in communication in winter with the rest of the world; also robberies committed; one man condemned for robbery to be hanged; but no one found to act as executioner; the provost marshal resigned ; nobody would accept the ofiice, so that the man was first reprieved, then pardoned.
