I8o4—First movement towards Education at public expense made by the grant of public land for foundation of a college in Charlottetown. 1823—Market House opened in Charlottetown. x825—Benevolent Irish Society established in Charlottetown—A system of public schools upon a National plan, begun by the passage of an Act for the encouragement of education in the different districts and counties in this Island, and the payment of small grants to teachers. 1827—Winter mail route changed from Pictou and Wood Islands to Capes Traverse and Tormentine. First Agricultural Society organized. I83o—Aug. 5, Catholic Emancipation Bill for P. E. Island passed. First arrival of a steamer—the “ Richard Smith ”—at Char- lottetown. 183I—Sept. 6, Steamer “Royal William ’ arrived at Charlotte- town on the way from Halifax to Quebec. 1832—Steamship mail service between Charlottetown and Pictou begun by steamer “ Pochontas. " I833—First store opened at Green Shore, now Summerside. i835—Supreme Court first held sittings in King's and Prince Counties. 1836—Right Rev. {Eneas McEachern, First Bishop of Charlotte- town, died at St. Andrew's. Central Academy opened in Charlottetown. l837—First Inspector of Schools (john McNeill) appointed. 1847—Provincial Building, on Queen Square, Charlottetown, com- pleted and opened, Religious disabilities of Roman Catho- lics removed by Statute. 1849—November 12th, Brig Fanny sailed from Charlottetown for San Francisco where she arrived on the 28th of May, 1850. 185l—April 23rd, Responsible Government introduced under Lieutenant Governor Bannerman. i852—Education Act passed.
