16 PRINCE EDWARD ISLAND equipment and supplies were at the same time received from Eng- land. In Charlottetown the Prince of Wales Rifles was organized under command of Captain Neil Rankin, with john Lea and \V. E. Dawson as his lieutenants ; the Irish Volunteers under command of Captain john Murphy, with Richard Reddin and Owen Winters as lieutenants, was also formed; and in Southport, the DundasVol- unteers were organized, under command of Captain Henry Beer, with Francis Stanley and George Stanley as lieutenants. On the 24th of May, x860, there was held the first review of a purely volunteer corps. The parade consisted of artillery under command of Captain Pollard and Lieutenant Thomas Morris ; the Prince of Wales Rifles under Lieutenant Lea ; and the IrishVolun- teers,—all under command of Captain Rankin. In 1861 an Act was passed entitled “ An Act to provide for the organization of a volunteer force for the defence of the Island.” By this Act it was provided that the Lieutenant Governor-in-Coun- cil should maintain all the volunteer corps already organized and that volunteers should not be required to serve in the militia force. The establishment of the volunteer force thus created was placed under command of the Lieutenant Governor. A Rifle Association for Charlottetown was formed in the same year, and a military band was organized under direction of Mr. Robert Galbraith. The P. E. Island volunteers were then styled a brigade, of which the Hon.j. H. Gray was Colonel-in-Chief, the Hon T. Heath Haviland, Lieut. Colonel for Queen’s County, the Hon. L. C. Owen, Lieut. Colonel for King's, and the Hon j. C. Pope for Prince. The force included a troop of cavalry and seventeen companies of in- fantry. In the year 1875, after Confederation, P. E. Island was set apart as Military District, No. 12, with the following officers: Staff—Colonel, john H. Gray; Paymaster, Captain Frank D. Beer ; Adjutant, Captain Russel G. Freeland ; Storekeeper, Major Robert Cropley. Garrison Artillery—No. I, Majorj. B. Pollard, Charlottetown; No. 2, Major Thomas Morris, Charlottetown ; No. 3, Captain Charles Owen, Georgetown. Infantry—Provisional battalions—Queen's County, Major Henry Beer, Commanding; Captain's Francis Dogherty, Samuel McRae, and Francis T. Longworth; King’s County, Major Allan McDonald, Commanding; Captains Donald McLeod, Peterj. Ryan and Malcolm Leslie ; Prince County, Major Hunter Duvar, Com- manding; Captains George R. Montgomery, Thomas Ives and Herbert Yeo.
