Engineers—The Charlottetown Engineer Company was organ- ized in 1878, Major George L. Dogherty, Commanding, with Lieutenants A. B. Stewart and Alexander Home.
At the time of the Riel rebellion, in 1885, two companies of artillery were mobilized here under command of Major J. D. Ir- ving, with Captain Pasxmore, and Lieut. C. B. McNeil] of No. 1 Company, and Captain F. S. Moore and Lieut J. A. Longworth of No. 2 Company. Captain Stewart of the 82nd Battalion and Cap- tain T. S. McLeod also volunteered the services of their companies. Drill and preparation for active service were continued for some time, and the four companies remained under arms at the Drill Shed in Charlottetown, for thirteen days. But the rebellion was soon under control and the services of the P. E. Island volunteers were not required.
But on the outbreak of the South African war in 1899 several contingents of militia left Prince Edward Island for the scene of action. The first contingent included the following men of the 82nd Regiment, viz., Herbert Henry Brown, Ernest William Bow- ness, Reginald William Cox, Artemas Robert Harris (wounded at Cronje’s Laager, February 27, 1900) LeRoy Harris, Walter Lane, Roland Ernest Lord, Frederick B. McRae, Arthur James Benjamin Mellish, Thomas Ambrose Rodd, Lorne Stewart, James Stewart Walker, John Frederick Waye (wounded at Paardeberg, February 18, 190o); The following members of the Charlottetown Engineer Company: John Boudreau, Nelson T. Brace (wounded at Cronje's Laagar, February 27. 1900) Necy Dorion, Richard Joseph Foley, Frederick Charles Furze, Charles Herbert Hine, William Alfred Riggs, killed in action at Paardeberg, February 18, 1900; and Roland Dennis Taylor, killed in action at Paardebug Feb. 18, 1900; the following members of the Fourth Regiment Canadian Artillery: Lawrence S. Gaudet, J. P. Leslie, James Matheson, Michael James McCarthy, Hedley V. McKinnon, Hurdis Leigh McLean, Joseph O'Rielly, James Edward Small, Edmund V. Hessian, James Mor- rison.
A second contingent was afterwards dispatched which includ- ed—of the Canadian Mounted Rifles,—John A. McDonald, Lieut- enant of Eighty-second Queen’s County Battalion). Fourth Regi- ment Canadian Artillery,—-George A. Arbuckle, Alfred J. Holl, Thomas L. McBeth, William A. McEachern, James A Pigot, W. J. Proud.
