The total population of Prince Edward Island between the ages of eighteen and forty-five years, was, according to the census of i9“, 16,868, of whom the large proportion of 16,592 were native born, only 157 being British born and 119 foreign born.
A large proportion of these men are considered by the medical authorities to be physically unfit on account of defective eyesight, defective teeth, lameness or slight blemishes ; and a considerable number are unable to enlist for military duty because of family re- quirements and other responsibilities rendering it essential that they
stay at home.
The occupation of the great majority of the men of military age in this Province—that of the production of foodstuffs essential to the life of soldiers and horses in the field—caused some of those who might have enlisted to remain at home upon their farms.
in view of all these considerations, a large proportion of the men of Prince Edward Island available for military service have taken up arms in defence of their country and empire.
