Three additional school inspectors, com- petent for the work, were appointed, not only to examine classes in the branches of education ordinarily taught in the public schools, but also to inspect school gardens and to give instruction in the elements of Agriculture. At the Short Courses practical instruction was given to large classes in animal husbandry, grain growing, poultry management, milk testing and dairying, horticultures, etc., and in the Long Course the students were instructed in the judging of beef cattle and heavy horses, in swine and sheep husbandry, in field work and poultry management; also in English, arithmetic, and book-keeping. Seed Fairs were held at Charlottetown, Georgetown, Sum- merside, Murray River, and Souris. There was also a Poultry Show held at Summerside under the auspices of the P. E. Island Poultry Association. Agricultural Exhibitions were held at Souris and Alberton in addition to the Provincial Exhibition, and County Exhibitions held at Charlottetown, Georgetown and Summerside. FARMERS' INSTITUTES By an act of the Legislature passed in 1901 authority was given for the formation of two Farmer's Institutes in each elector- al district. In 1906 this was amended to five in a district, but not to exceed fifty in the Province. By amendments in 1912 this was amended to permit of sixty Institutes being formed in the whole Province. The minimum membership for a farmers’ institute is thirty. On the payment of fifteen dollars in fees a grant of twenty dollars is paid by the Department of Agriculture. Five dollars of the amount is spent by the Department to defray the expenses of agri- cultural meetings. A special grant, not to exceed thirty dollars, may be obtained by each Institute annually for the purchase of pure bred live stock, on condition that an equal sum is raised by the members of the Institute for this purpose. Seventy- five per cent of such special grant and money collected from the members must be applied within a year to the purchase of pure bred stock. The Secretary of Agriculture is Superintendent of Institutes. CENTRAL INSTITUTE The Central Farmers’ Institute was organized in 1911, with Rev. Dr. Gauthier, President, and Mr. Walter Simpson, Secretary.
