Whether the ship saw them is (to me) doubtful as a small object close to the water can easily be missed even by an alert man on watch. At any rate, it was quite clear that John Dan had “no use for the God Damn Eye-talians”.
He was very much interested in “the little boat" as he called it and took a hand with Howard and Angus in carrying the canoe across the beach to the west side of the bar, i.e. to the eastern shore of St. Mary’s Bay.
