'Women on the Go" The P.E.I. Women 's Institute The P.E.I. Women 's Institute was formally established in 1913. From that time onwards, its members have promoted innumerable community and nation-wide projects. One of their major objectives has been the ad¬ vancement of better educational opportunities for youth. Attesting to this, is the Institute's annual scholarship that is awarded to an Island girl who is studying towards a Degree in Home Economics. Throughout both World Wars, the Institute has provided the much needed "care package", for the soldiers overseas. During World War II, they even donated an ambulance to the Red Cross Hospital in Europe! However, the Institute has not only aided Canadians overseas in wartime. They have provided many services in a variety of places around the world. Some of them have included: the adoption of children; the packing of used clothing and special boxes for the U.S.C .; the collection of boxes to send overseas; and the provision of sewing machines for assorted centers in Ceylon. At home, the Institute has promoted many variegated projects, one of them being Craft Instruction courses. They are also responsible for the Annual Showcase of Island Crafts, at the Provincial Exhibition. Just this year, a tourist was heard to remark, "I would come to the Island all the way from Maine, just to see the quilts on exhibit by the Women's Institute." The Brackley Chapter.
