of programmes of their own. Actively participating on ”clean-up” day, sponsoring the drama, musical, and dance festivals, and organizing a ”mission band”, and a ”baby band”, are iust a very few of these com— munity oriented programmes.

Prior to the take-over of Brackley School by the government in I972, it might accurately be stated that the school was operated and maintained through the generosity and hard labor of the Brackley Women’s Institute. Its members, together with the help of their husbands, painted the school and the fence posts surrounding it, and made sure that flowers were periodically placed in the window boxes. These women were also in- valuable in providing the necessary supplies for the school, such as, brushes and text books. Moreover, at every school activity, the Institute members provided treats for the children. At Christmas concerts, school picnics, and dUring Education Week, they treated every child with either apples or oranges, ice—cream, and bags of candy. They were also in- strumental in organizing the various activities that took place at these annual school events, such as sports and games.

The Brackley Women’s Institute is hailed across the Island for the outstanding work that its members have done towards making their community safety conscious. The women have sponsored Red Cross First Aid courses, Red Cross swimming classes, and Defensive Driving courses any number of times. Their lone Girl Guides have also been taught the rudiments of safety. However, the Institute has not only dictated to the needs of the young adults and youth of their community. On the contrary, it has implemented a number of programmes designed specifically for Senior citizens. One such proiect involved asking all the Senior citizens in the district to gather at a member of the Institute’s home. There, an en- ioyable evening was had by all, with a delightful lunch rounding off the

night’s activities. Another time, all the people of the community would be invited to a member’s home to view slides that someone had taken while on a vacation to a foreign country like Russia.

The Brackley Women’s Institute is also renowned for its work with the many charitable organizations throughout the world. Its members have knitted many articles of clothing for the Unitarian Service Committee and provided iust as many layettes for the Red Cross overseas. They have canvassed frequently, for the Salvation Army, United Appeal, and Cancer Society.

In I954, the Brackley Women’s Institute depicted the beginnings of the Women’s Institute not of P.E.I. The name of the play, performed at the old P.W.C. building was: The Woman with a Vision, Adelaide Hoodless. It was a smashing success. The occasion was the annual Women’s Institute convention. All members were in attendance. The famous cast is vividly
