PROPHECY OF DEATH Mrs. Mclnnis was a local woman who toured the community of Brackley doing washing for the residents. At an early age, she decided to visit a fortune-teller with the idea of learning what the future held in store for her. She was told, much to her horror, that she would marry four times and that each of her husbands would meet a violent death. Her first husband would be drowned; her second, shot; her third, killed in an accident; and her fourth, hanged. Mrs. Mclnnis was decidedly shook up. However, as the years flew by, she reasoned that such prophecy was only for superstitious fools. She therefore, married. The man was Jim Blackmore . Shortly after, he was drowned in . Then, she married a Mr. Wallace , who met his fate one Halloween night in Kensington . He was shot and killed instantly. Later, she married a man by the name of Diamond. He was severely injured in a railroad accident and died a year and a day later. Undaunted, she, now Mrs. Diamond , married Mr. Mclnnis . This man was the only one of her husbands who did not fulfill the dreaded prophecy. Both he and Mrs. Mclnnis lived to ripe old age. He died a natural death. THE MYSTERIOUS VAULT One Halloween night, a group of youths from Brackley decided to explore the Sherwood Cemetery. Towards midnight, they came upon a padlocked, iron door that led somewhere underground. Curiosity over- camem, and the youths broke open the padlock, lit a match, and proceeded single file through the entrance. What they found sent a shiver down their spines. There were eleven coffins arranged in order from large to small. Almost immediately, the youths ran home and told their parents of their terrifying experiences. It was later determined that what the youths had found was a vault. It had been built by a man by the name of Heartz. Inside, were the remains of his family. He had been a bricklayer and a mason and so, could build the vault himself. To prevent further disturbances, the vault was com¬ pletely enclosed. Today, there are no traces of it visible. Sister Ella Cullen was one of those youths who visited the vault. She still remembers the experience, vividly. 53
