PROPERTY OF U.P.E.I. Foreword This book is dedicated to the many Cardigan area people who gave their time, their stories, and their valuable pictures to see this book completed. Co-operation and enthusiasm were everywhere during the book's making. Boundaries are for maps, tax purposes, and legal documents but have very little to do with community spirit, friendship or the growth of a village. Just as people from all over once gathered in Cardigan to witness the launching of a new ship and wish it well, people from all over put their heads and their hearts together to complete this book of the village of , its people and its friends. This is by no means a complete history of the area of Cardigan , Prince Edward Island . As is often the case, time and money dictate the quantity of information that can be included. The material was compiled, over the past eight years, by Kevin Rice, Stuart Docherty , Nellie Nabuurs , Marlene McKeeman, Anne MacEachern and Pearl Rice . This work was financed by various grants from our provin¬ cial and federal governments. Pearl Rice then took this information and, after much organization and hard work, wrote the original manuscript. Highlights of Area is a combination of facts as they are found in the archives, newspapers, and other written sources, and stories as told by many of the older residents of the Cardigan area. What you recall may not be exactly what is printed here. Please remember that generations of history comes to us through stories handed down by word of mouth over the years. This editor believes it would be remiss of us not to take advantage of our most valuable source of history. I do regret that time did not allow more of the wonderful stories to be heard and added. Acknowledgements Special thanks is given to Margaret Quinn , without who's determination this project would never have seen completion. As well the co-operation of Holland College's Martin Dorrell, Journalism; Mary Carter , Business Div¬ ision; and Andy Hennessey , Office Studies is gratefully acknowledged. Many people outside the Cardigan area have offered information and though in some cases the material was not used, their thoughtfulness is appreciated. As editor, and a non-resident of Cardigan, I must personally acknowledge the hard and gracious work of Doreen Shepard, who worked closely with me in the editing of this book. Acknowledgement is also given for the information gained at the P.E.I. Museum and Heritage Foundation and the Public Archives. Beth Brehaut April, 1987
