bigger game than can be found today. The following story from The Patriot, Oct.16, 1897, gives some indication of this.
Dr. Allen and Mr. F. Binns had quite an adventure on Thursday while out partridge hunting at the rear of the farms fronting on the Launching River. They had been quite successful, having shot nine or ten partridge when the doctor, following another bird, suddenly heard a growl from a bear that was partially concealed in a clump of bushes.
Having only a light shotgun with him, the doctor considered it advisable to leave well enough alone, and return to the village without the dozen birds he might otherwise have obtained.
A party is to be organized to track the bear and secure his pelt, if
possible.
