The Anna MacDonald was the last of the three ships built by John A. MacDonald shortly after the end of World War 1. The Anna MacDonald was the sister ship of the Barbara MacDonald . She was christened by her namesake on the day of her launching. Several years later, in 1924, the Anna MacDonald met an untimely fate off the coast of Nova Scotia . Following a terrible wind storm which swept from Yarmouth to Sydney, reports of many shipping fatalities have come to light. As the days passed the list grew longer. One such ship was the schooner Anna MacDonald . She was loaded with coal on a voyage from New York to . When the storm struck, she was off Prospect , Nova Scotia . The dangerous channel, rocks and ledges there have been responsible for the loss of many a gallant schooner. A constant search was maintained for some trace which would lead to further knowledge as to the fate of the six men aboard the Anna MacDonald . After the storm, portions of the wreckage drifted ashore at Prospect . The villagers assembled the parts sufficiently to distinguish the name Anna MacDonald . The wreckage was so ground and splintered, it proved there could be no hope for the schooner. There was a slight hope that they had abandoned the vessel and made port in a rowboat and eventually some lonely cove along the coast. To this end, an extensive search was made of the coves and inlets near Prospect . This proved to be of no avail. No trace was ever found of Captain Miller and his five crew members. Shipbuilding in Cardigan came to a close in 1920. The Island timber supply had been exhausted. Wood was replaced with iron and steel and sailing ships fell victim to steamships. The remains of shipyards, sawpits and ponds were overgrown by trees and bushes.
