In the 1930's, the government began selling liquor. A liquor store, known locally as a "vendor shop", was established in Cardigan . Russel McLaren was in charge of the store located in the basement of the Scrimgeour's house. In the late 1950's, it was moved to what was known as the "chicken coop" where it remained until it moved to its present location in 1967. At one time, one had to obtain a prescription or "script" to buy liquor. Later, books of coupons were given to purchasers limiting the amount of liquor that could be purchased in a week.
