Royal Bank cheques, 1910. Bank Largely due to the extra business generated by John A. MacDonald 's mill and shipyard industries, a branch of the Royal Bank was located in Cardi¬ gan from 1918 to 1920. It was located to the right of John A's store. Messrs. Nickerson , Louimer and Doucette, as well as Donald MacLaren , Robert Cain , and John MacCormac were employees at this bank. Garages The first garage in the village was the Cardigan Garage. It has remained in the MacKenzie family since it was opened in 1915 by James MacKenzie . After his death it was taken over by Norman MacKenzie . The garage was housed in various structures on the same site. It is now operated by Norman MacKenzie 's son, Donald. Rice's Garage has a varied history. It was originally a general store operated by D.C. Morson. Daniel Acorn was the first to operate it as a garage. It was vacant for a number of years until Daniel Rice and Acorn went into partnership and re-opened the garage. Mr. Rice later left the business and Dan Acorn sold cars on the premises. He added a small lunch counter and grocery store. In 1972, Mr. Acorn sold the business to Cecil Rice who, with his sons, continues to operate the garage. Brothers Garage was started by Alban Brothers in 1952. Over the years the building has expanded to accommodate a growing business. Mr. Broth ¬ er's son, Harold, now operates it. Fox Farms Prince Edward Island was known all over the world for the breeding of black and silver foxes. 37
