Travelling Salesmen The travelling salesman provided a much-needed service to the commun¬ ity. The first salesmen were craftsmen who travelled from one settlement to another, lodging in the homes of their customers while making boots, shoes and clothes to order. Often when times were hard, the women of the household could not afford to buy much. Nevertheless, they were shown the wares with the hope that they might part with some of their hard-earned "egg-money" for some lace to dress up that dark blue dress or, perhaps, something as practical as a new cooking pot.
