laid to rest in the cemetery at All Saints. The cemetery, which is across the road from the church was fragrant with juniper and sweet fern and beauti¬ ful with golden rod and white immortelles. A tall wooden cross here com¬ memorates a Redemptorist Mission given in 1884. Many beautiful monu¬ ments can be found in this cemetery. In 1884, Rev. J.C. MacDonald was called back to college. Upon his leave, Very Rev. Dr. MacDonald became Pastor of Georgetown and Cardigan . Father MacDonald died in 1886 and Rev. William Henry Grant came here but retired soon due to ill health. Father Grant died in 1887 and is buried in All Saints cemetery. Cardigan was then served jointly by Father Gillis of St. Peter 's and Father M.J. MacMillian of St. Teresa 's. In 1888, Cardigan and Georgetown were reunited under the care of Father Stephen Phelan . Rev. John C . MacMillan came to Cardigan in 1894 and remained until 1916. While here he wrote a two-volume series of books entitled The Catholic Church on Prince Edward Island . Rev. J.H. Johnston replaced Father MacMillan but stayed only two years and was replaced by Father Bernard Gillis in 1918. Father Joe Rooney came here after Father Gillis but only stayed one year before he was called to Morell . Father Joe was soon replaced by Father Michael Rooney who worked in the parish for 14 years. Father Michael started the Catholic Women's League organization, which is still very active in the parish today. The first president of the C.W.L . was Mary Maclntyre . Father Michael Rooney left Cardigan in 1940 to take up duties at Bloomfield . Father Joe Rooney returned but lived only two years after his reappointment. His remains were interred in the All Saints Cemetery on Jan. 10,1942. Father Patrick MacMahon replaced Father Joe, staying four years. In 1946, he returned to Basilica and Father Harold Croken arrived. During Father Croken's seven-year stay here, David MacDonald , a parishioner, planned new cemetery plots to be added to the crowded origi¬ nal cemetery. Mr. MacDonald became ill shortly after this and died. He was the first person to be buried in the new cemetery. All Saints Church, 1979 57
