Eel and smelt fishing was also a common recreation. This may have been more a job than sport however, since if one was to become good quite a bit of practice was required. The first feed of smelts or eels was indeed a treat to local fish lovers.
In the winter, skating was an activity enjoyed especially by the children. Many children eagerly waited for the school day to end so they could get on their blades and glide about on the ice.
The men of the community enjoyed horseracing on the ice. A newspaper account tells of one such race:
