September 1905, to Marie J. MacDonald, daughter of Captain Joseph MacDonald of Cardigan.
J .A. MacDonald took an interest in politics and early in life became active in the Conservative party. He repre- sented his district in the provincial legislature, and represented King’s County in the House of Commons. Later in life he entered the Senate.
A merchant and produce exporter, Senator MacDonald played a promin- ent role in the commercial life of the province. He was president of J .A. MacDonald and Company Ltd., at Cardigan; president of Associated Shippers Inc., at Charlottetown; and a director of Island Foods Inc.
He was first elected to the provincial Legislature in 1908 and was re-elected in 1911 and 1923. He was Minister without portfolio in the Matheson

Government from 191 1 to 1915 and Minister of Public Works and Highways for the province from 1923 to 1925.
Senator MacDonald was a member of the Charlottetown Club, director of National Services, and Honorary Fuel and Food Control Administrator for P.E.I. during the First World War. He was a devout and active member of the All Saints Church in Cardigan.
