Marie MacDonald

,Marie Josephine MacDonald was born in Cardigan in 1877. She was the daughter of Master Mariner Capt. Joseph MacDonald and Anne Burke. She graduated from Newton Hospital Training School for Nurses in Newton, Mass. in 1902. After working for a time in Newton she became assistant to Margaret Donahoe (Mrs. James McNichol) at Philadelphia General.

In 1905 she married John A. MacDonald (Senator) and returned to Cardi— gan. Here she raised a large family, was active in community and church affairs, painted and did needlework.

What she is perhaps most remembered for is the sharing of her nursing skills. On many occasions she would assist at deliveries, bandage wounds, give insulin injections and relieve suffering in any ay she could. Her daughter, Barbara MacDonald, who trained at the Roy 1 Victoria Hospital School of Nursing in Montreal, continued this tradition.
