Lt. Col. John A . MacDonald A son of Senator John A . and Marie J. MacDonald , John A. MacDonald was born Feb. 4,1913, in Cardigan . He received his education at St . Dun- stan's University from where he graduated in 1938 with a Bachelor of Arts degree. At the outbreak of the Second World War, John A. was in command of defence garrison at . He was promoted to captain in 1940 and later was assigned to England where he was appointed to the Highlanders as regimental officer. Some months before D-Day, he was called up to the 9th Infantry where he served several months. John A. MacDonald was wounded while leading his company through heavy fighting at Caen, July 25,1944. John A. was first elected to the Legislature as a Conservative in the 1945 by-election. He was defeated in 1947, re-elected in 1951, and defeated again in 1955. He also met defeat in his bid for election to the House of Commons in 1949 and 1953 but was successful in the general elections of 1957 and 1958. He remained a member of the House of Commons until his untimely death on January 4,1961, at the age of 48. Mr. MacDonald was very active in community affairs, having held many prominent positions in public service. He was a member of the province's industrial committee of the Atlantic Provinces Economic Council. Always a champion of the cause of veterans, he was an active legionnaire and, in 1954, was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel in the P.E.I , militia. In 1941, John A. MacDonald married the former Margaret Smith of . Margaret MacDonald Margaret (Smith) MacDonald was a politician in her own right. On May 29, 1961, Margaret MacDonald was successful in her bid for the King's County seat in the House of Commons. She became the first woman elected to the House of Commons in the Maritime provinces. Indeed, she was the first woman elected east of Ottawa. Mrs. MacDonald was also successful in the 1962 election. As Conservative member for King's County, Margaret MacDonald per¬ formed an admirable job in upholding the public image created by the MacDonald family from Cardigan . Considering the very few women who have ever been elected to the House of Commons in Canada , Margaret MacDonald is to be especially com¬ mended for her work, and many are grateful for her courage in taking that first successful stride into the world of politics. Bennett Campbell W. Bennett Campbell was born in Montague in 1943. He was educated at Poplar Point School, High School and Univer¬ sity. He entered the teaching profession in 1962. He taught for eight years at Montague Regional High and for two at St . Paul's Elementary in Montreal. Bennett was first elected to the Legislative Assembly on May 11,1970. He was re-elected in the general elections of 1974,1978 and 1979. As well, he was appointed to the provincial cabinet on Sept. 10, 1972. He served as Minister of Education, 1972-78; Provincial Secretary, 1974-76; Minister of Finance, 1976-78 and President of the Treasury Board, 1976-78. 79
