East Point was a well known community in the 19th century. This may be due to its early settlement and the status of several individuals and families. After the turn in the century. East point slowly diminished in population and import— ance East Point was mentioned in the books of Lucy Maud Mont-

The schooner Betsey cast away on August 6, 1792 off East Point. It belonged to Mr. Cambridge, a merchant of Charl- ottetown. Luckily no lives were lost. 59 The name Betsey's Point must have originated with this ship not Betsey Beaton as was commonly thought. (There was no Betsey Beaton until after 1808).60
