A September 1875 issue of Island Argus reported that a body of a man was picked up on the beach of East Point. He was described as being very tall and well dressed. It was sug— gested that the man belonged to the ship Cape Ann.80
A small schooner struck an iceberg off East Point on April 20, 1877 and immediately sank. The crew of four made it to shore with great difficulty. They were exhausted. The sch— ooner was sailing from Canso to the Magdalen Islands. 81
On the night of Tuesday, Sept. 2, 1879, the Dominion Line Steamer Quebec grounded on the East Point Reef. Captain Hade had sailed Monday from Halifax for Montreal with sixty passengers onboard. The cargo of sugar, salt and iron had to be thrown overboard.82 The Captain ordered the cache of sugar broken before being thrown over so none could be salvaged.“4 The following winter local people were able to pick up most of the iron due to a natural ice wharf}?3 After everything had been thrown OVerboard the ship proceeded on her voyage with little
damage.
In 1880 the ship Onwan sank off East Point. Edward,
the eldest son of James MacDonald of Kingsboro was drowned.85 On the eVening of Sept. 12, 1882 the warship Phoenix
was stranded on the East Point Reef. The ship struck the reef
