Lauchlan also carried on merchandizing later. Donald Beaton

(Alexander's son), may have operated a store at East Point be— fore he moved CO Soueis and carried on a successful business until his death in 1865.157 Fraser's storefl’was:es‘tahlished about 1890 to meet the needs for Sterns' Cook House at East Point which was operated during the summer months. Ezra Fraser, the first manager, took over the store in 1910 from Mr. Sterns.158 (Mr. Sterns also operated a store in Souris).159 This store is still operating today.

Lauchlan MacDonald,140 Alex R. Beaton,l4l James Beaton,142 Alexander MacDonald and Roderick MacDonald,143 were all East Pointers who taught school at one time or another.

k’East Pointers were also engaged to work at the light—

house, several became clergy, Ronelda MacLean (daughter of Alexander) became a lawyer144 and two members of Ronald (Prospect Hill) MacDonald Jr's family became Doctors.145 One could claim to befiprofessional politician. Daniel MacDonald and John A. MacDonald were ssWyers. Angus MacDonald worked as a joiner. There were also many servants.146

In 1866, after many costly shipwrecks, an Act was pass~ ed to get money for the erection of a lighthouse at East Point.l47

The lighthouse was built in 1867 (about one half mile from its present location) on land that was higher.148 ( I be— lieve this makes this lighthouse the oldest operating light—
