fire on January 50, 1917. In 1918 a still larger church was built. It was replaced in 1966. St. Columba's Parish was primarily a Scottish one but later it had a large Irish element as well.181 The Rev. Francis John MacDonald was born at East Point, and made his early studies at the District School. He was the first student at St. Andrew's College to be ordained (in 1840). He had charge of all King's County Missions for sixty years. He died at St. Georges in August of 1900.182 The East Point United Baptist Church was erected and open~ ed in 1835. The first pastor was Rev. John A. Shaw. In 1864 a lar— ger church was built. The present building in Kingsboro was dedica— ted on December 6,1903. The South Lake Christian Church was eStabl— ished in 1840. The first building was built at the South Lake cross— roads. A new church was built in 1884.185 This church is referred to as the "fisherman's church" because it can be seen from ships at great distances and is used as a navigational aid. The Rev. John A. Ford served both churches. He was a grandson of John Ford a pioneer at East Point.184 The politics of most people at East Point has been Liberal. East Point has contributed five prominent liberals to provincial politics. They were the Hon. Donald Beaton, Alexander Beaten, Hon. Lauchlan MacDonald, John MacDonald and Hon. James R. MacLean. It almost seemed that an East Pointer sat in the Assembly or on the EX— ecutive Council from the time of the Catholic Emancipation to the turn of the century. The reasons for this was probably twofold.

Firstly,East Point was an established community, therefore, the

people had more time for politics. Secondly, East Point was always
