Donald Beaton served several terms in the House of Assem— bly for the Liberals including terms beginning in 1851 and 1865.199 In 1840 he sat on a Committee of Charity with George Soles, John Col— lings, W. Douse and Patrick Walker.200 He also served with Patrick Walker as a Director of the Highland Society.201 He sat on the Leg—

islative Council in 1859.BQ§ He was a Justice of the Peace and

served on the Souris Board of Health in 1864.205 Hon. Donald Beaten died on November 15,1865 at the age of

49 in Souris of diabetes. A newspaper account of his death des—

cribed him as "a quiet, unassuming man, and his loss, as a merchant,

will be felt by many".204 He was buried in St. Columba Cemetary.

His vacant Assemblyman seat was won by Emmanuel MacEachern, his Tory

cousin from South Lake.205 The following notice appeared in the Examiner in 1865.

It may indicate how he became a successful merchant.206
