Alexander Beaton was born at East Point. He was the son of Alexander (Sandy) and Ann Beaton. His brother was Hon Donald Beaton.207 Donald's sketch lists Alex's siblings. Alex was the last surviving brother of this family.

Alex received a district school education. He later had

some seminary training.208 He did not enter the priesthood but he

did teach school for several years in Kingston, Ontario.209 This is where he probably met his wife, Eliza O'Leary of Ontario.210 They had no children. However, it is known that they did rear Ellen Creamer (daughter of Hughie Creamer and Elizabeth Sheehanl. Ellen "Nellie" Creamer married Daniel MacLean of East Point.211 They were the parents of Alexis, John, Joseph, Mary, Flora, Theresa, Georgina (Jean) and Mercedes.212 9

He was elected to the House of Assembly in 1859 and ser— ved for one term.215 At this time, his brother, Donald, was a mem~ ber of the Legislative Council. Alex Beaton also served as Justice of the Peace. He also served as President and Secretary of the Red Point Debatirg Society.214

Alex was a farmer; he formed his homestead on the south- side of the lighthouse road. He was also the first lighthouse keeper at the East Point Lighthouse.215 This was a political appointment. The lighthouse was located on his farm. He also served as post- master until the Post Office was moved to the home of his cousin,

James Angus Beaton.216

Alex, we have seen, could be arrogant and haughty.217 He could also be witty. It has been said that while in Charlottetown
