43 years. He then carried on merchandizing and farming at East Point . He served on a committee to incorporate the Provincial Dairy Assoc¬ iation. He later served as a Director and Vice President in that organization. He served as President of the Cheese Board of Trade for P.E.I. He served as President of the East Point Farmers Inst¬ itute. He also was secretary, cashier, and managing director of the 240 East Point Dairy Association. That was the group that operated 241 the East Point Cheese Factory at Lakeville . Lauchlan also ser- 242 ved as a school trustee for the local school. He served on the St. Andrews Society Committee with Angus Beaton for East Point in 243 1922. ^ He served as lighthouse keeper from 1897 until Angus Mac 244 Intyre assumed the role. Lauchlan's was a political appointment. In 1873 Lauchlan served in the Legislative Council. He was then elected to the Legislative Assembly in a byelection on December 16, 1875* This vacancy was caused by the death of Lauchlaris neighbour Emmanuel MacEachern . Lauchlan was re-elected as a Liberal in the elections of 1876 and 1879- In the April 9a 1879 election Lauchlan defeated John C. Underway by a vote of 539 to 481. He re- 245 tired from politics when his term was out. (His wife's cousin James R. MacLean , also a Grit, was a member of the Assembly at the same time). He lost in the election of 1900 but was re-elected and 246 placed on the Executive Council in the following election. It has been said that once during a particularily tough election campaign, he was sitting in his usual place at the front of the church. The priest at St. Columba's then began a long serman on the Virtues of Voting for a particular party. The priest did not say it directly but he was attacking the Liberals. Lauchlan
