attended a different Roman Catholic Church in the area until the election was over.247 Lauchlan was involved in many personal and business act— ivities — Although he was a physically strong man he probably over- extended himself. He was not a businessman. He may have run the cheese factory into the ground. He may even have been too frugal (even for a Scottish Man) and too strict with his children.248 However, he did accomplish more in his lifetime than most other men. He was poor in money when he died but not in accomplishments. Teresa, his wife, died on March 19, 1916. He himself died in 1928 at the age of eighty—four.249 James R. MacLean was born at East Point on April 9,1859. He was the son of Alexander JMacLean and Mary MacDonald.250 Alex- ander was the son of Charles MacLean (who came to East Point in 1805) and Catherine MacDonald.251 James R. had four sisters. Ronelda was

smart; she moved out west and became a lawyer. James R’s other sisters were Catherine, Johanna and Flora Ann. James R. had a bro— ther John.255 James R. was also a cousin to Daniel MacLean and James J. Beaton.254 In November 1870 James R. Married Mary Armstrong of Summerside. She was the daughter of Ben. Joseph Nightman, a mem- ber of the Legislative Council.255 James R. MacLean moved to Souris

farm at East Point which he had inherited from hisfatherg58 (his brother John had inherited lands at Souris West and East Baltic).259
