John Scott carried on the farming operation following his father William, on the farm on the Old Malpeque Road (code 8). In 1926, William and his son, Scott, bought the Vernon Malone land (code 9). In 1966, they bought the R. Louis Cairns land on the North Freetown Road (code 12 and 13). Following

the purchase of the Malone property, William sold the 15 acres that John Cairns, his father, bought from Major Schurman in 1879, to D.M. Bernard.

John Scott m. Georgie Cairns, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Benj. Cairns, Wilmot. Benjfs grandfather, William Wilson Cairns, was b. Dumfries, Scotland in 1831 and came to P.E.I. when very young with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Cairns.

William and Helen came into possession of his father’s farm (code 8) folllowing his death, 25 Nov. 1973 and carried on the farming operation until two of his sons, James and Malcolm, graduated from Truro Agriculture College in May 1981. In 1985, they are working as full time partners. While on a six month Nuf f ield Scholarship, William visited the ancestral Cairns Home in Lockerbie, Dumfriesshire, Scotland. His sister, Winnifred and her husband, Rev. William McDowell also visited this area in 1962.

William and Helen (Pendleton) Cairns have three sons, surname Cairns and born in Freetown.

7a 6a5a4a3b2a John Scott b. 6 Nov. 1958. After obtaining his BA. at U.P.E.I. and his MA. from Dalhousie University. He became a journalist in the Sports Department of the Sault Ste. Marie Star and is a City Hall Reporter for the same paper in 1985.

it all his life. When Elton d. in 1960 his son, Howard, carried on the farming operation. Elton and Howard purchased land (code 11) from George N. Reeves and that land returned to Cairns ownership.
