GEORGE COOK George Cook was a miller and worked in Roger's Mills for over twenty years. He leased 66 acres of land on the 11 Jan. 1878 on the north side of Rogers Mill pond. This was part of the "Alemone Lot" that was mentioned in some deeds that were drawn up for land in this location (code 135). On 12 Jan. 1882 George Cook assigned this land to David Rogers . On the 20th Nov. 1886, George and Jane Cook purchased 47 acres of land and the mills at Walls Bridge for $1000.00. It is believed that George Cook ran these mills, as well as working at David Rogers Mills . In 1894, after George d., Jane sold the property to , who was m. to her daughter, Theodosia. The 1881 census states that George Cook was b. in England and was a miller and a farmer. George Cook m. Jane Doyle b. 1830 on P.E.I. They had a family of at least six children. 2a Maria b. 1861. She m. Azzur Reeves. (See Reeves history.) 2b Theodosia b. 1862. She m. . (See Wall history.) 2c Mary F . b. 1865. 2d John Dudley b. 1867. 2e Jabez Frederick b. 1870. He m. Miss Barclay . They moved to Claremont, N.H. 2f Anna Isabella b. 1872. EVERETT COUGHLIN Everett Coughlin moved from Fortune Cove to Freetown and was employed as a machinist at the Scales Hydro Electric Plant for a year around 1950. Everett and wife, Olive, lived in a house at the plant. BERNARD CROKEN Bernard Croarkin was b. in Ireland and it is believed he lived there all his life. He had three sons: Patrick, Bernard and John. They were born in Dunraymond, County of Monaghan , Ireland. Patrick stayed in Ireland and had two sons: John and Joseph. Bernard and John immigrated to P.E.I , in 1843. The trip from Ireland, about 3000 miles, took 3 months by boat. John with his wife and family accompanied Bernard and settled in Springfield , Lot 6 7. Bernard was b. in 1800. He m. Ann McCarville , age 23 ca. 1829. They had seven children, all but one were b. in Ireland. 1. Margaret who m. Owen McCardle of Middleton, and had two sons and three daughters. 2. Mary m. James Smith , Newton, and had four sons and four daughters. 3. Rose, n.m. d. 1910. 4. James b. 1836. He m. Mary McCarville of Kinkora , in 1865. She was b. 1846 and d. in Freetown in 1904. James d. in 1922. 5. Bernard b. 1838 m. Catherine McGuigan of Hope River . They had four sons and six daughters. 6. Ann m. James McMahon , and moved to Fall River, They had five sons and five daughters. 7. Catherine was b. in P.E.I , and m. James MacDonald , Emerald , and had five sons and four daughters. James Croken When James Croken , son of Bernard, got married he took his bride to Upper Freetown and settled on 50 acres of land (code 86) on the south side of the Main . That land was covered with virgin wood mostly hardwood and pine. Upon James' death his son Cornelius (Neil) had the home farm of 150 acres. In 1928 Neil sold the 50 acres in Lot 25 (code 86) to John Ambrose Curley and bought 100 acres in Lot 26 that was owned by William Deighan . This along with the 100 acres which he already owned made a 200 acre farm. James and May (McCarville) Croken had nine children all believed to have been b. in Upper Freetown . 2a Mary Ann b. in 1867; n.m. being the oldest she was mother to the rest of the family. She was housekeeper for her brother, Father Daniel P . Croken for many years. 2b Ambrose b. in 1869; n.m. He went to Denver, Colorado in 1885. He died there of pneumonia in 1892. + 2c Barnaby b. in 1870. He m. Mary Eliza Gorman in 1904. They had three sons and two daughters. One son, was Father Harold J . Croken, Charlottetown now retired in 1985. 2d Francis A. b. 14 Sept. 1875. He was m. 1 Sept. 1909 to Elizabeth E. McNally in . She was b. 20 Feb. 1877. They have four sons: Robert Francis , David (twin), William (twin) and Robert James , all b. in Springfield , Mass. and all served in World War II. Francis Aloysuis has lived in Springfield , Mass. since 1900. 248
