JAMES DRUMMOND According to information made available by the late Wilbert Drummond three brothers left Dumfriesshire, Scotland , in the early part of the nineteenth century and settled in Brookfield . Two of the brothers subsequently left for Upper Canada and the third, whose name was Thomas Drummond (1810-1882) remained and m. Margaret Gourlay (1807-187"5). From this marriage there were three sons, John, Thomas and James, and four daughters, Isobell, Mary Ann, Jane and Margaret. When they became of age, two sons, John and James, decided to look for some good farm land. They went to Emerald by horseback and from there followed some cow trails west of the settled areas. They followed trails through hardwood growth until they came to softwood growth. This led them to what is now known as South Freetown and they decided to settle and buy or lease land there. John subsequently made a deal with Thomas and traded his property in Freetown for the home place in Brookfield . As a result, Thomas and James were the two who established productive farms in South Freetown . It is from James that the Drummond name would survive because there were no males from either of the other brothers except for a boy adopted by John who died without leaving a male heir. South Freetown and more specifically the (now R 113) is considered to be home to all with the Drummond surname. This is probably due to the deep roots established by a farming people, because almost all the Drummonds, except for some in the fourth generation, were either active farmers or were raised to adulthood on the farm. James Drummond resided at South Freetown on the (code 115). This land was original¬ ly leased to Thomas Drummond 12 Apr. 1862. A deed was issued to James, 24 June 1878. This property was owned by Eldon Drummond, and is now transferred to Harold Drummond , Irwin Drummond and Ronald Drummond . James Drummond was b. 1836; he resided at this location until his death in 1913. His wife, Charity Stetson , was b. in 1831 and d. in 1911.
