JOHN HEFFELL James Heffell was one of Travellers Rest 's earliest settlers. John Townsend who had received a large tract of land near the corner in the early 1820's from the Crown, divided his land with his half brother, James Heffell , who with his wife came from the British Isles with the Townsends, and landed on the North Shore in the - Park Corner area. James, the son of James Heffell m. Ellen Marchbanks , Travellers Rest . Their family included: William who m. 1. Agnes Milligan , and they resided on the old farm. They had one son John who m. Elva Reeves , Freetown , and resided in Freetown for a number of years before moving to Reads Corner . William m. 2. Maude Rayner b. 1884; d. 17 Sept. 1984. Among other members of this family is a daughter Mary Ellen ( Mrs. Ralph R. Burns ) who resides in Freetown . (See Burns history.) John Heffell was b. in Travellers Rest in 1899, son of William and Agnes (Milligan) Heffell. He came to South Freetown to work at the Scales Hydro Electric Plant, c. 1927. He m. Elva Reeves in Mar. 1930. Elva was b. in South Freetown in 1909 the daughter of Robert and Mary (Frizzell) Reeves. John and Elva lived in the house at the electric plant for a number of years where John had charge of operating the water powered machinery which produced the electricity to supply the customers in Freetown , Kensington , Bedeque and Kinkora . In 1946, John and Elva bought the Edison Dammarell farm on the (code 118) and moved there. Their son, Waldron, presently resides on this farm. John and Elva moved to East in 1962. John d. in 1973 and Elva now resides in Summerside . They attended the United Church. They had seven children. 2a Agnes b. 1 Oct. 1930. She m. Ralph Hardy , 11 June 1952. They lived in Summerside where Ralph was on the Police Force for a number of years. Then they moved to Alberton where they farmed for many years. In 1982, they disposed of their property in Alberton and moved to the former Warren's Mill place in Burlington . They have three children: 1. Daryl, b. 23 July 1959. 2. Darlene , b. 18 Oct. 1962. 3. Dale b. 2 Feb. 1967. 2b Hazel b. Apr. 1932. She m. Vernon Stetson of South Freetown in 1951. Vernon is a farmer and also is an employee of C.N. Marine . (See Stetson history.) 2c Linus b. 20 Feb. 1934. He m. Feme Ryder, St. Nicholas on 10 July 1958. Feme is a registered nurse. Linus has been employed for many years with the Canadian Tire Associate store in Summerside . Linus and Feme , reside on and they have four children: 1. David, b. 11 Feb. 1961; m. Carol Banks , Summerside , in Jan. 1984. They reside in Summerside . 2. John, b. 31 Aug. 1963. He is employed at Layton's Spoke and Track Store , St. Eleanors . 3. Allan, b. 28 June 1966. 4. Karen, b. 21 July 1973. Allan and Karen attend schools in Summerside . + 2d Waldron b. 14 Dec. 1935. He m. Joyce Birch , North Bedeque on 3 Oct. 1941. He took over the farm when his father and mother moved to East (code 118) and carried on a mixed farming operation. Joyce is a school teacher and is employed by the Unit 2 School Board. They have three children. 3a 2d Chris b. 30 Oct. 1965. He attends school in Summerside . 3b 2d Heather b. 28 Nov. 1971. She attends school in Kinkora . 3c 2d Jason b. 21 June 1974. He attends school in Kinkora . 2e Myrna b. Feb. 1938. She attended school in South Freetown and went to Toronto in 1956. She m. Douglas Clarke in 1965 and lived in Nottawa, Ont. Myrna passed away 17 Feb. 1984. They have two children: 1. Lorena, b. Jan. 1966 and 2. John b. July 1968. 2f Mary b. 25 Nov. 1939. She m. Eric Day , Norboro in 1962. Mary and Eric moved to B.C . in 1965. They now live in Landing, B.C. They have one son, Phillip, b. June 1964. 2g Wesley b. 31 May 1942. He m. Eileen Crozier , East in 1963. She was b. 19 July 1944. Wesley apprenticed as an electrician with his father, John. He now is a licensed electrician and a substitute school bus driver. He and Eileen reside in Summerside East. They have two children: 1.
