All householders gave as their principal occupation farming, except the following: James Doyle and Simon Nolan (Nowlan): blacksmiths; John Hacket and Francis Murphy: joiners; John Gallagher: teacher; Thomas McBride: wheel-

right; and John Murphy: tailor.

The fifty—eight householders occupied 4273 acres of which 2174 were arable. According to the Meacham Historical Atlas of 1880 the area here defined as Sou' West contains approx- imatley 4300 acres. (6) Allowing for error in calculating exact acreage in 1861 it seems likely that the whole area was occupied; but only about half of it was cleared and under cultivation. Only four persons owned their farms. Fifty—four householders rented land at an annual rate of one shilling per acre. Leases were for 999 years. Of the four owners one is the son of an owner from the 1841 census; so by 1861 only three tenants had been able to purchase

their farms in the twenty years from 1841 to 1861.

Table 10 Shows the farm animals owned by the Sou' West residents, and the quantities of food and goods produced in

the previous year, i.e., in 1860.
