Following the death of Bishop Bernard D. MacDonald on December 30, 1859, Bishop Peter McIntyre became the new Bishop of the Diocese of Charlottetown.

Cornelius Howatt and Alex Laird, former Conservatives joined the Liberal ticket in this election to show their opposition to having P.E.I. become a member of the Confederation of Canada; and together won 1428 votes; the Conservative candidate, Mr. Strong won 303 votes; results in Herald March 13, 1867.
