Patriot, June 26, 1873 reported the dispatch of Governor General Frederick Dufferin that Confederation had been signed and would come into effect July 1, 1873.

Summary of House of Assembly proceedings, in Patriot, April 7, 1877, quotes Mr. Calhoun as saying—that though there were a large number of Catholics among his constit- uents"they had not voted for him." However one of those seconding Mr. Calhoun‘s nomination in the Fourth District Prince was James Wall, a resident of Somerset and presum- edly a Catholic; see Patriot August 5, 1876.
