ment. (EJ Table 14 gives a population profile of fifty-five
households that can be identified in both sources.

Excluding the nine households with two or less persons, the average size of the family is 6.9 persons; with a range from three to thirteen. A look back to Table 9, in Chapter 3, will show a remarkable similarity between the population
in 1861 and 1881. There was, apparently, a decrease in the number of households from 1861 to 1881: from fifty—eight
to fifty-five; and a larger decrease in the number of households that contained families: from fifty—four to forty—
six.
A comparison of surnames in the three censuses (1841, 1861,
1881) for Sou' West/Somerset shows considerable consistency.
