CHAPTER 5 - Prom Somerset to, Kinkora - Pigure 4- shows Somerset as mapped out in the Meacham Atlas of 1880, with a total of sixty households. The Canada Census of 1881 for Prince Edward Island has also been used to obtain a more complete picture of the settle¬ ment. (3l) Table 14 gives a population profile of fifty-five households that can be identified in both sources. Table 14: Somerset Population, 1881______________ Age: -16 16-45 45-60 60 Totals Female: 88 63 16 13 180 Kale: 71 63______16 13 163________ Totals: 159 126 32 26 343 Excluding the nine households with two or less persons, the average size of the family is 6.9 persons; with a range from three to thirteen. .A look back to Table 9, in Chapter 3, will show a remarkable similarity between the population in 1861 and 1881. There was, apparently, a decrease in the number of households from 1861 to 1881: from fifty-eight to fifty-five; and a larger decrease in the number of households that contained families: from fifty-four to forty- six . A comparison of surnames in the three censuses (1841, 1861, 1881) for Sou* West/ Somerset shows considerable consistency. (o<2
