John E. McDonald 's salary for the year 1886-87 was $250.00; his assistant, Mary A. McDonald was paid $57-50 for three months. For the year 1884-85, when Mr. McDonald was apparently without an assistant, his salary was $305. (40) The statistics in Table 16 show an interesting attempt to equalize salaries for men and women in the first class; the upwards of seventy dollars difference in the other classes, reflects the male bias of the time. By the close of the decade an over-supply of teachers, low salaries and fewer incentives to enter the profession eliminated teaching as a ready market for many of the young Islanders, who increas¬ ingly looked off the Island for their future.
