From 1891 to 1929, Harvest Excursions were popular with the unem- ployed. Maritimers went West to work at harvesting grain in the late summer. A ticket one way to Winnipeg cost $15 and half a cent a mile to destination.82 One Islander interviewed said he went out in 1907 with 1,100 men from Nova Scotia and P.E.Island. They were kept in separate cars with a box car in between, which was used as a jail if necessary.83 Many Island- ers liked the West and did not return. The last Excursion Train left the C.N.R. Station in Souris on August 3, 1923.34
All in all, the Island lost 15,350 people in the years 1891 to 1911.55.
