Recruiting meetings were held in the County with Judge A.L. Fraser as recruiting officer and Lieut. R.C. McLean in command. Members of the draft were quartered in Souris . On April 26, 1917, the citizens of the Town under the leadership of Mayor , J.B. Matthew honoured the departing soldiers. Thirty men, including 8 N.C.O .'s, left for where they were joined by a similar draft recruited in Charlotte- town under Lieut. L.H. Davidson . Upon arrival in England , the artillery casualties were not as heavy as anticipated and the ranks were transferrd to Infantry shortly after. Later, Colonel H.M. Davidson , father of Lieut. L.H. Davidson , arrived in England . Through his influence, the men were transferred back to the Artillery, their Commanding Officers having kept track of where their men had been assigned.84 Horses were indispensable in this war, especially to the Artillery units. All the guns were moved by horsepower. When members of the 27th Battery went to Petawawa for training, certain personnel took their own horses. In the first part of this War, a successful drive was made to buy oats for the horses that were in France. H.D. McLean of Souris accompanied the boat which conveyed the feed overseas in 1914.85 The 105th Highland Regiment, consisting of 1,250 men and officers under command of Lieut. Col. A.E. Ings and Lieut. Col. Campbell, was recruited early in 1916. For a short time, part of D. Company under command of Capt. W.E. Hardy was stationed in Souris . The remainder, under Lieut. U.G. Dawson , was quartered in Georgetown . The Unit sailed from Valcartier, Quebec , in the summer of 1916. Upon reaching England , the unit was broken up and the personnel transferred to other units. The 105th included 38 volunteers from Eastern Kings . Four recruits for the British Navy from Eastern Kings enlisted in Char- lottetown in this period: J.W. Robertson , W.B. Bruce , W.J. Rose —all from East Baltic and Daniel S. MacDonald from Monticello .86
