Community 129 spectators were there according to the Charlottetown Herald of September 30, 1891.98 The purpose of the Souris East Yacht Club was "to promote the building of fast, sea worthy yachts and fishing craft." The entries in Class A for the cup were governed by the rules of the Club: Yacht to measure 25 to 30 feet on load, water line and drawing, exclusive of center board and rudder, at least one foot of water for every twelve feet of overall measurement. Fishing boats, Class B , were to measure under 30 feet with no restrictions as to build. The cup was to be competed for on Souris Harbour at the Annual Regatta and won three consecutive years by the same boat owner before it became his property. Captain Dominic MacDonald was Commodore of the Club and J.C. Hous ¬ ton, M.D. , was Secretary . It was the secretary's job to record the measure¬ ments, rig and designer of the boats and the names of their owners." Harry McLean of Souris bought the Linda May , built by Elisha Hynes of Morell , from Frank MacDonald . 10° She won the cup in 1901 and 1902 but lost to two Summerside yachts in 1903: The Defender owned by O.G. Clark and a yacht owned by J.L. Read . A faster boat was needed. Harry McLean bargained with Elisha Hynes , who said he could build another boat that would outrace anything from Summerside . But, at the last minute, he was offered a job in Boston which wouldn't wait and which he could ill afford to pass up. He recommended Jim Schenell for the job, sent the plans down from the States and later had the sails made there and sent down. This became the Zephyr, which won the cup the third time. She also won victories in New Glasgow , Pictou and Sydney and sailed in at least one race in . Jim Schenell was a noted boat builder in Souris ' early days. William Poole , a hardy fisherman, had this to say about him: Jim Schenell built the Frank C. He was quite a boat builder. Among the small vessels for fishing the Outlook was the champion around here in the early part of the century. Schenell built her around 1908 or so. Sold her to Hughie Jackson of Murray Harbour . Schenell would build a boat cheap. One time I was coming from where I was cutting ice. I asked him how much for a new boat, taking my old one in trade. Forty dollars, he says.101 The Examiner of July 25, 1904 noted: One of the most pleasant and enjoyable of the annual outings which has become a feature of our Island summers is the regatta at Souris . ..Some of the finest boats that have ever competed in P.E.I , will take part. Then we will see the struggle between the Zephyr, recently built in Souris , to recover the Souris cup carried off last year by Summer- side's splendid boat, the Defender. Dory, fishing boats and other races will add interest. The new Souris band will have a picnic on the same day.
