In 1950, when Hon. Melvin McQuaid addressed the newly formed Board of Trade, he noted that the population of Souris at that time (1,183 in 1951) was about the same as it had been in 1900 when an earlier Board of Trade was formed. (1,140 in 1901 census). In 1981 the population of Souris was 1,452.
