Preface

This history of Southport has been compiled in an effort to present a picture of our district over time, to pass on some village folklore, and to record events of interest as told by older residents. We have also photographed some of the older homes and recorded available information on churches, schools and early industries.

To those people who were interviewed and willingly shared their knowledge, we express our sincere appreciation. We acknowledge the assistance of the New Horizons program of the federal Department of Health and Welfare, without which this history would not have been possi- ble. We further wish to thank those who have assisted on this project, in- cluding Marjorie Frizzell (cover), Florence Roper (photography), Ivan Mur- naghan (photographic copying), and Don Stewart, R.C. Tuck, Judy Mac- Donald, and Maurice Rogerson.

Among the source materials that have been used are: Hutchinson’s 1864 History of Prince Edward Island, C.H. Mackintosh’s Canadian Parliamen- tary Companion (1879), Benjamin Bremner’s Memories of Long Ago (1930), Andrew Hill Clark’s Three Centuries and the Island (1959), Meacham’s Atlas (1880), and government records of education and vital statistics in the Public Archives of Prince Edward Island.
