Dr. Leo Frank started fox ranching at Rosebank Farms before the First World War. He was fluent in six languages, and because of this was able to find many markets; in 1916 he shipped foxes valued at $25,000 to Japan. His property is now owned by Warren Hood.

Bill Brown started fox ranching on Brows Lane off St. Peter’s Road and later moved to Southport where he still resides.

The Raoul Reymond Fox Ranch

A native of Geneva, Switzerland, Raoul Reymond first learned about the fox-fur industry during a visit to the United States in 1919. Mr. and Mrs. Reymond came to Canada in 1925 to purchase foundation stock for a ranch so they could begin ranching in Europe. Instead they bought a 25-acre farm in Southport from W.K. Rogers.

The Reymond ranch grew from the original 12 pair of foxes to be, in peak times, second in volume only to the huge Colpitts ranches of Alberta and Salisbury, New Brunswick. Twenty men were employed to care for as many as 5,000 foxes. Mr. Reymond was the first to breed a platinum-

coloured fox.

In 1930 he was one of three men who signed an agreement with Maritime Electric to bring electric power to Southport. They each guaranteed a pay- ment of $30. per month for three years—a significant amount of money in the Depression.

The Reymond farm is presently owned by Mr. and Mrs. Bill MacMillan. The Reymonds are now retired and residing nearby in Sherwood.
