The Barn This building was erected in 1947 as a barn for the purebred Holstein dairy cattle of William Perley Mutch , whose family had farmed the land since the late 18th century. In 1959 the property was converted into the Southport Country Club, providing facilities for swimming, tennis, golf, horse-back riding, dining and dancing. In 1972 the dining room was renovated and a bar added. Motel and Cottages In 1946 Wendall and Ollie Mutch bought land overlooking the Hillsborough , where they built their home (now 20 St/atford Road) and 14 cottages. They later added six cottages and three housekeeping cottages. In 1960 a 10-unit motel was built. The entire property was bought by Jack and Verna Anderson in 1963. The Andersons later purchased the seven Cottages and moved them to the Southport site where the business still operates. 28
