The tavern was a good place to meet old friends and make new ones while waiting for the Ferry. Many a yarn was told around the old pot-bellied stove, and little nips from the jug made it better in the telling. Best of all, they had no worries about getting home, as the old horse knew the way and never ran out of gas. Dependent on the ferry, the tavern went out of business when it did. The Walsh Tragedy Southport wharf was the scene of a tragic accident on June 25, 1928 which claimed the lives of Arthur, Blanche and Genevieve, members of the family of Mr. and Mrs. John Joseph Walsh of Elliotvale . They came to Charlottetown on Monday morning to purchase some last-minute items for Genevieve's wedding which was taking place on Wednesday, and also to meet their brother George and sister Irene from New York , and brother Joseph, a seminarian from St. Augustines Seminary in Toronto . After meeting the last train, they left Charlottetown at quarter to twelve. The night was shrouded in thick fog and mist which may have been respon¬ sible for them not seeing the water soon enough. The car went over the wharf and took three lives by drowning. Irene and George survived, and also Joseph who had decided to stay in town overnight. Short Stories From Old Timers 1) One lovely summer evening a man who had a little too much to drink was slowly wending his way down what is known as , when he happened to stagger into the cemetery. There had been a grave dug that day and he fell into it and it took just too much effort to climb out, so he stayed there and had a good night's sleep. Next morning a man who lived nearby was taking his usual short cut across the cemetery when he heard a voice say "What time is it?" He looked around and this head was coming out of the grave; at that point the man fainted.
